Chapter Twelve

Tuesday morning went more smoothly. Tessa drove Wes to school and watched him disappear into the mass of kids, then glanced at the clock—8:00 a.m. Uneager to go back home or straight to work, she called the one person she knew she could count on. “Jillian? Did I wake you up?”

“No. Bill woke me hours ago. He makes these cute little yips around six-thirty every morning. I’m having a cup of coffee and thinking about eating another chocolate Pop-Tart. What are you doing?”

“I just dropped Wes off. Can I stop by? I don’t want to go to work just yet.”

“Sure, come on over. But I’m not getting out of my sweats. Remember, I don’t go in today until two o’clock.”

“I wouldn’t dream of asking you.”

Tessa hopped on I-71 and drove north to Jillian’s quiet, suburban neighborhood. It, and the 1950s-style ranch house she’d bought from her parents, suited her perfectly.

Jillian opened the door as soon as Tessa pulled the key out of her ignition, and Bill darted past her into the driveway. “Careful where you step, Tessa,” Jillian called out as Tessa bent to play with the fuzzy black-and-white pup. “No telling what’s under the snow.”

As Bill licked her finger, then tried to chew on it, Tessa scooped him up in her arms, inhaling his puppy scent. “He’s adorable.”

“He is,” her friend said with a proud smile. “Smart, too.”

The three of them made their way inside. Tessa noticed a stack of photos on the coffee table, next to a trash can and some photo albums. “What are you doing?”

“Making a scrapbook. I wanted to put together an album of Todd’s and my life together so far.” Leaning down, she tossed Bill a stuffed dog toy.

“Your life sure is coming together, isn’t it?”

“I guess so.” She shrugged. “I’m really happy, Tessa.”

“You deserve to be,” Tessa said.

Jillian wandered into the kitchen. “Do you want some coffee? You look like you could use a pick-me-up. How’s Wes?”

“Yesterday went fine.” Briefly, Tessa filled Jillian in on Wes’s first day back at school and the impromptu dinner at Pluto’s Pizza. “What do you think I should do about Keaton?”

“Just enjoy it, Tessa.”

“You don’t think it’s strange that there’s something brewing between us? We’ve got so much else to deal with right now.”

“Maybe your heart doesn’t know that. Or care.”

“Keaton’s still getting over his wife.”

“And…?”

Jillian was entirely too matter-of-fact. “Do you think it’s possible to love again after something like that? I mean, is it possible for him to love again one day in the future? If he found the right person?”

“I don’t see why not. Keaton sounds like a loving man.”

That wouldn’t have been how Tessa would describe him, yet she supposed it was true. “Well, it doesn’t matter, anyway. This isn’t the right time for either of us.”

Bill nudged Jillian’s leg with his black nose and she picked him up. “You’ve really fallen for that boy, haven’t you?”

Tessa looked up at her friend. “Who are you talking about? Wes?”

Jillian nodded. “You’ve changed your whole life for him.
